Having spent a moderate amount of time in Oregon in my early years of
birding, I was fortunate to be at Oregon Straight University in the
mid-1970s when Mike Passmore was working on his PhD under Dr Bob Jarvis.
I hope (expect)(imagine) that Bob has maintained an interest and some
sort of monitoring of the Band-tails down there. Perhaps he could be

Another source that had maintained a BTPI census in the 70s and 80s was
the USF&WS at Wm Finley NWR. Pigeons used a mineral springs on the
refuge (on Pigeon Butte, no less), which made it a convenient census
location. Through the 1980s, Band-tail use was declining, but I haven't
the numbers to put with my memories. Maura Naughton is the current
Refuge Biologist at Finley NWR, and may have this info.

I do know that I saw only ONE Band-tail while I lived on Ankeny NWR from
May of 1985 through June of 1987!! My father grew up adjacent to the
refuge, 8 miles south of Salem, in the 1930s, and remembered them
nesting
in the oak and fir timber on Looney Butte just east of the Ankeny Hill exit
on I-5. They aren't there any more...

At least the States aren't allowing September hunting seasons on the poor
pigeons any more.
