Hello, this is Portland Audubon's Rare Bird Alert. This recording was
made Thursday, March 16th. If you have anything to add, call Harry
Nehls at 233-3976.

An offshore trip out of Newport, MAR 11, went out 20 miles to a large
pod of bait fish. A large bird flock had already gathered, including
350 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 10 POMARINE JAEGERS, 60 SOOTY SHEARWATERS,
8 SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATERS, and 3 PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS. There were no
fulmars, and only 15 BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSSES. The next scheduled
offshore trip is April 9th.

A large herring run into Yaquina Bay last weekend attracted a large
number of BLACK SCOTERS and at least 5 OLDSQUAWS. Large numbers of birds
are [attracted to (?)] these runs and perhaps something interesting will
show up.

Ducks and geese are moving now, but overall birding is still slow. There
are many SANDHILL CRANES on Sauvie Island, but no large flocks.

A pure WESTERN GULL was at Bonneville dam MAR 14. A female RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER was at the John Day dam. Large numbers of RING-NECKED DUCKS
are gathering now in the Columbia River Gorge, while the numbers of
other duck species is dropping.

A BAND-TAILED PIGEON and several MOUNTAIN QUAIL were out of Mosier MAR
11.

That's it for this week.
