The Spruce Goose is a very large all-wooden flying boat (a bit bigger
than a 747, wing span 319 ft 11 in, length 218 ft 8 in, weight 213 tons),
built by the late Howard Hughes, billionaire and recluse, founder of
Hughes Aircraft and owner of Transworld Airlines, at a cost of $40 million
in 1947.
It flew exactly once, on Nov 2, 1947, a distance of a thousand yards at 70
ft above the water, with H.H. at the controls. It is now on display in
Long Beach, California.
