Stuart Celarier and Anya Averill made a quick swing through northeastern
Oregon last weekend (March 17-19). Anya sent the following report:
We left Portland after work Friday night, got to LaGrande around
11:30 pm. Spent Saturday in the La Grande area and Sunday am around
Pendleton, stopped at Deschutes River on the way back. The weather
was cold, snowy, sunny, windy, calm, etc.
.
The absolute high point for me was ACTUALLY finding the Great Gray
Owl! We were off Spring Creek Road north on I-84 from LaGrande in the
Blue Mountains. Most of the snow IS gone, though there was more
falling on Sunday am. What a beautiful bird and like many owls, we had
forever to watch him. We were wandering throught the forest keeping a
lookout and my husband located the owl. All 5 of us were able to walk
quite close and observe the owl for as long as we liked.
.
I don't know what else is expected to be in the area at this time of year,
but we saw: Western Bluebird, Red Crossbill, Pileated Woodpecker,
Northern and Loggerhead Shrike, W Meadowlark, Red tail and
Roughlegged Hawks, Northern Harrier, Sandhill Crane, Ring Neck
Pheasant, Bald Eagle, Marsh Wren, Kestral, N Pintail, Gr wing teal,
Cinnamon teal, Gadwall, Common and Barrow's Goldeneye, Bufflehead,
Ruddy Duck, California Quail, Snow Goose, Ring Neck Duck, Ring Bill
Gull, etc etc.
.
It was a pretty sparse weekend as far as number of birds to see --
weather maybe and maybe hitting a pocket between spring and winter.
The LaGrande area, Cold Springs and Umatilla NWRs were all very light.
But I have to say the Great Gray Owl made up for any complaints about a
slow weekend. I look forward to another weekend a few months hence
when we might find Veery, American Redstart, Gray Catbird, etc.

Find something good this weekend and give the hotline a call!
