SUBJECT: Sen. Hatfield Breaks Promise: Supports Gorton
Sufficiency Rider

Sen. Mark Hatfield (R-OR) has broken a promise made to the
American people and to his colleagues in the U.S. Senate to not
support the suspension of environmental laws in order to resolve
timber issues (see Congressional Record, July 26, 1989).

Senator Hatfield could have fulfilled his promise and flatly
refused to support the Gorton provisions to suspend all federal
laws and permitting illegal logging operations. Instead, the
Chairman of the Appropriations Committee included the Gorton
language in the "Chairman's Mark," meaning the language was
already in the Senate version of the rescissions bill and Sen.
Gorton did not even have to offer it as an amendment. The
Gorton-Hatfield Rider will be considered by the Senate late
Wednesday or Thursday.

A Day of Rage Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 28
Activists need to let Sen. Hatfield know that breaking a
promise of this magnitude will not go unnoticed. Please call
Senator Hatfield tomorrow as many times as possible and encourage
other activists to do the same. Ask him why he is breaking his
promise to stay within the law. Remind of the tremendous damage
caused by similar riders during the 1980's.

Activists can also go to the Senator's Portland and Salem
offices and ask for a copy of the logging provisions in the
rescissions package and an explanation why the Senator has broken
his promise. Andy Kerr and Mike Roselle paid a call on the
Senator's Portland office today and were arrested for staging a
sit- in, although they were not permitted to actually enter the
Senator's office.

Please do whatever you can to put pressure on Sen. Hatfield,
particularly in the media; letters to the Editor and calls to
radio stations and editorial boards are other possible avenues to
get the word out.
