To digress from the recent thread somewhat, there is an interesting article
in the latest issue of Smithsonian (April '95) about people who record
natural sounds, including bird sounds, in some very high-tech ways. Also
interesting is their laments about how difficult it is to find a place on
the earth, much less in Washington State, where one can hear and record only
natural sounds, without being interrupted by sounds of human origin (they
group birders with hunters as one of their "nuisance categories"!). One
tantalizing photo of a scientist with a voice-print, but nothing about song
recognition! Teresa Michelsen temi461 at ecy.wa.gov

Oh, by the way, for you geologists, there is also a fascinating article
about landforms in eastern washington caused by Ice Age megafloods from
Montana... Ever wonder how Potholes got its name? (Really BIG potholes
we're talking about here, from floods that carried 10 times the water of all
the world's present day rivers combined.)
