Warren Hall reports a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD in the Millwood area of
Spokane. The bird has been in the backyard and at the feeder of
the Glen Bailey's (sp?) for the past three weeks. Please call the
Bailey's for access to the bird - 509-924-6778. See Washington
DeLorme p. 89, c-6.

Warren also relays that Kristine Stewart (sp?) observed 3 OLDSQUAW
on Medical Lake just southwest of Spokane. The birds were still
observed on March 29. See Washington DeLorme p. 88, d-3.

Dan Svingen and I observed two male EURASIAN WIGEON on Goose
Heaven Lake northwest of St. Maries, Idaho on March 25. The birds
were in with 300-400 American Wigeon. Head north from St. Maries
on Idaho 3 and turn right onto Hell's Gulch Flat Road at milepost
90.8, right before the St. Maries Gun Club. Stay left at the "Y"
and follow it to the lake. See Idaho DeLorme p. 60, c-2. Further
conversations with Dan indicate the female Eurasian Wigeon first
seen here in late February persisted near St. Maries after Jeff
Wisman's sighting of a female near Spokane, negating the thought
it may be the same bird.

Dale Goble had a single BLUE JAY in his backyard March 21 here in
Moscow.

>From the Internet, Stuart Celarier and Anya Averill (apologies for
blowing that pronunciation) observed a single GREAT GRAY OWL in
the Blue Mountains of Oregon between March 17 and 19. The bird
was up Spring Creek Road, west on Interstate 84 from LaGrande.
This sight is well described in Evanich's Birder's Guide to
Oregon, sight G-7, on page 186. It can also be seen on Oregon
DeLorme p. 86, c-3.

Warren Hall reports Jim Acton found a breeding pair of
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS just northwest of Spokane. The birds are
in the burned area on the east side of the Spokane River about a
mile south of Seven Mile along Washington 291. See Washington
DeLorme p. 88, c-4.

A very early WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER was seen at Fields Spring
State Park south of Asotin, Washington on March 26 by Dick
Johnson. Dick reports seeing the bird near Summit Ridge along the
Mountain View Trail on Puffer Butte. Also seen along the trail
were 3 PINE GROSBEAKS and a single WILD TURKEY. To reach the
park, take Washington 129 south from Asotin and continue 4.5 miles
south of Anatone. See Washington DeLorme p. 43, d-7.

Dan Svingen and I saw a singing BEWICK'S WREN at Cottonwood Park
along the south shore of Lake Chatcolet west of St. Maries on
March 25. Cottonwood is about half way between Plummer and St.
Maries along Idaho 5. Also in this tiny park were no less than 10
BROWN CREEPERS.

A flock of 93 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were on the McNary NWR
on March 31 according to Mike Denny. The birds were on the
eastern end of Humorist Road. Humorist Road connects with US 12
near Burbank. There were another 22 GWFG 3.5 miles south of
Burbank at Casey Pond, along with a lone MUTE SWAN. See
Washington DeLorme p. 40, c-1.

SANDHILL CRANES were flying over Rocky Ford Creek about 10 miles
north of Moses Lake on March 31, according to Russ Roundy. One
mile south of Soap Lake 11 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS were feeding in the
hay pastures on both sides of Washington 17. Russ also reports
TUNDRA SWANS in wheat fields 2 miles south of Davenport that same
day. Moses Lake and Soap Lake are on Washington DeLorme p. 69.

Mike Denny reports a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, BURROWING OWL and
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS along Stateline Road that borders Walla Walla
County and Umatilla County, Oregon. See Washington DeLorme p. 40
and 41, at the crease on the bottom of the page.

At the Walla Walla River Delta today, March 31, Mike Denny saw 44
DUNLIN and a second or third-year GLAUCOUS GULL. The delta is
just north of the junction of US 12 and US 730 in western Walla
Walla County. See Washington DeLorme p. 40, d-1.

John Ratti reports a CINNAMON TEAL just north of Moscow this past
week. I heard my first YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD of the season just
east of Moscow today. Also, the BARN OWLS residing on my property
are nesting -- the female is sitting on 8 eggs.

Mike Shipman reports an early TURKEY VULTURE near Whitebird, Idaho
and the Salmon River on March 29.

Mike Denny reports the first WHITE-THROATED SWIFT of the year near
Port Kelley along US 730 in southwestern Walla Walla County on March 31.
Also there were CLIFF SWALLOWS and CANYON WREN.
