This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

ROSS' GEESE showed up at two locations this past week. John and
Marty Hirth report 7 birds at Mann Lake, Nez Perce County Idaho,
on April 30. Bob Woodley reports a single bird with CANADA GEESE
in Leslie Down Park along the Columbia River in Richland,
Washington, today, May 5. This bird was also seen by Mike Denny.
Also at Leslie Down were 2 FORESTER'S TERNS. Mann Lake is east of
the Lewiston Orchards. To get there, take US 12 west into
Lewiston, cross the Clearwater River and follow the detour signs
for East Lewiston. Once around the construction, stay on Main
Street toward East Lewiston. At the blinking light, turn right
onto Lindsay Creek Road. Follow it until it terminates at Grelle
Avenue. Turn left onto Grelle and after Grelle makes a 20 m.p.h.
right turn, turn left. Immediately you'll see a sign for Mann
Lake. Continue straight, through the dead end, to the lake. See
Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1.

Bob Woodley also reports a CLARK'S GREBE from Leslie Down Park
along the Columbia River in Richland on May 5. Also there, in the
less manicured portion of the park, was a single HERMIT THRUSH.

Mike Denny reports a single GREAT EGRET at the Walla Walla River
Delta, just north of the junction of US 730 and US 12 in western
Walla Walla County today, May 5. Also there were AMERICAN
AVOCETS.

Andy Stepniewski reports a single GREAT EGRET and BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON along the southeast side of Susan Lake in the Columbia
National Wildlife Refuge north of Othello, Washington. Andy also
reports there were two banded TRUMPETER SWANS in this same area on
April 22. See Washington DeLorme p. 53, a-7, specifically T17N,
R29E.

Karen Toews has a HARRIS' SPARROW visiting her feeder east of
Troy, Idaho. The bird is associating with WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROWS. If you're interested, give her a call at 208-835-5646.

Larry Marsh reports 30 SNOW GEESE on the Spangle, Washington
sewage ponds on April 27. These are easily viewed from US 195?
just north of Spangle. Also there were 6 BONAPARTE'S GULLS. See
Washington DeLorme p. 73, a-5.

Twenty BONAPARTE'S GULLS, along with 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS were at
the Genesee, Idaho, sewage ponds on April 30, according to John
and Marty Hirth. Head south from the Genesee Junction along US 95
about 1 mile to Cow Creek Road which heads east from the highway.
This will lead you back to the ponds. Also in the vicinity were 2
SWAINSON'S HAWKS.

BONAPARTE'S GULLS were also reported below Wanapum Dam on April 29
according to Andy Stepniewski. Wanapum Dam, on the Columbia
River, is just south of Vantage, Washington. See Washington
DeLorme p. 52, halfway between a and b, 1.

A single BONAPARTE'S GULL was also observed by Dick Johnson and
his ornithology class along the south end of Lake Chatcolet, Idaho
on April 29. Chatcolet Lake is north of Idaho 5 between Plummer
and St. Maries. See Idaho DeLorme p. 60, c as in chickadee, 1.5.

Mike Denny reports a pair of BARN OWLS easily seen in the road cut
for Washington 17 4 miles north of Mesa, Washington in Franklin
County. Mesa is southwest of Connell, west of US 395. See
Washington DeLorme p. 53, d as in dowitcher, 8.

Andy Stepniewski had some interesting spring sightings along Crab
Creek north of the Saddle Mountains in southern Grant County. See
Washington DeLorme p. 52 and 53, b as in buteo across both pages.

On April 29 Andy reports a single NORTHERN GOSHAWK in the Smyrna
area, b-3; SOLITARY SANDPIPERS just west of Smyrna in the wet
grass; 2 LEWIS' WOODPECKERS just east of Beverly, b-1; and a great
assortment of shorebirds, including SEMIPALMATED PLOVER,
BLACK-NECKED STILT, AMERICAN AVOCET, WESTERN SANDPIPER, LEAST
SANDPIPER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, WILSON'S PHALAROPE and DUNLIN near
the saline ponds, 1 mile west of the Grant and Adam County line
south of Washington 26 west of Othello.

In the same general region, Mike Denny observed 6 DUNLIN and 5
BLACK-NECKED STILT were seen along Dodson and Frenchmen Roads
about 10 miles west of O'Sullivan Dam. O'Sullivan Dam is at the
southend of Potholes Wildlife Area north northwest of Othello,
Washington. See Washington DeLorme p. 52, a-4.

Dave Holick reports 4 WILSON'S PHALAROPES and a pair of GADWALL on
the Syringa sewage ponds east of Moscow. From the intersection of
Mountain View Road and Joseph Street in Moscow, follow the signs
for Robinson Park. Just east of the Syringa trailer park are the
sewage ponds. See Idaho DeLorme p. 58, halfway between b and c-1.

A CORDILLERAN FLYCATCHER was singing April 30 along Sclee Road
southwest of Uniontown, Washington according to John and Marty
Hirth. Schlee Road heads west from US 195 about 0.5 mile south of
Uniontown and eventually takes you down Steptoe Canyon to the?
Snake River and Washington 193 which will return you to
Clarkston. See Washington DeLorme p. 57, d-7, -8.

Mike Denny reports BLACK TERNS, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, COMMON SNIPE,
and BLUE-WINGED TEAL at the display pond at McNary National
Wildlife Refuge just east of the Tri-Cities, along US 12, in
northwestern Walla Walla County.

I also had several region-wide reports of CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRDS
this past week, along with CINNAMON TEAL, BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS
(oh goodie) and HOUSE WREN.
