Kelly Cassidy recently described a mystery owl heard in
cedar/larch/Doug-fir forest. It doesn't sound much like a Flammulated
Owl to me--all the Flams I've heard could not be described as like a
barking medium-sized dog. Their calls are very soft, and the first note
is short and quiet. Habitat is rather odd for Flammulated as well, which
are usually found in lower elevation Doug-fir/ponderosa pine habitats.

My wild guess is that it was an odd Barred Owl giving only two hoots
instead of the usual eight. The habitat is right and the barking
description would fit.
