This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

David Man (sp?) and Jim Acton report a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW along
the Centennial Trail east of Spokane on May 24. The bird was 0.75
miles west of Harvard Road along the Centennial Trail,
specifically between AT&T cable markers 152 and 154. Harvard Road
heads north from Interstate 90 toward Otis Orchards. See
Washington DeLorme p. 89, c-7.5. If you have any questions, call

A LEAST SANDPIPER, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, 4 EARED GREBES, 2 HORNED
GREBES and 3 male BLUE-WINGED TEAL were at Mann Lake, on May 20,
according to Dick Johnson. Mann Lake is east of the Lewiston
Orchards, Idaho. To get there, take US 12 west into Lewiston,
cross the Clearwater River via the Memorial Bridge and stay in the
left lane. Take the first left after crossing the bridge onto
Main Street toward East Lewiston. At the blinking light, turn
right onto Lindsay Creek Road. Follow it until it terminates at
Grelle Avenue. Turn left onto Grelle and after Grelle makes a 20
m.p.h. right turn, turn left. Immediately you'll see a sign for
Mann Lake. Continue straight, through the dead end, to the lake.
See Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1. Best viewing is usually from the
east side of the lake. Also in Lewiston, at the railroad bridge
levee pond were 3 AMERICAN AVOCET and 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS. To
get there, US 12 west into Lewiston, cross the Clearwater River
via the Memorial Bridge and stay right past Locomotive Park. At
the first traffic light past the park, turn right on the US 12
bypass and 18th Street. Go about a mile to the parking area on
the right just before the railroad bridge. See Idaho DeLorme p.
54, a-1.

Along Peola Road west of Clarkston, Washington, Dick Johnson saw
SAGE THRASHER and BREWER'S SPARROW. Take Washington 128 west from
Clarkston about 18-20 miles. Large sagebrush patches on the west
side of the road are where to look. See Washington DeLorme p. 43,
b-6, T10N, R44E, Sec. 30.

Dick also had some sightings from northwestern Whitman County,
Washington. Starting at the Steptoe sewage ponds just south of
Steptoe, which are visible from US 195 but better seen from the?
next road west, Dick reports a single RED-NECKED PHALAROPE.
Heading west on Washington 23 from Steptoe to Ewan, and then north
from Ewan to Rock Lake, Dick saw 3 EARED GREBE, 4 WESTERN GREBE, a
male BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 17 CASPIAN TERNS, 2 WILSON'S PHALAROPES,
and 5 dowitchers, only one of which could be seen clearly enough
to identify as a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER. Travelling back to Ewan,
Dick headed south on Cherry Creek Road about 3 miles before
heading west onto Mail Route 4160. The first 4 miles along the
route has ponds. Here Dick reports AMERICAN AVOCET, WILSON'S
PHALAROPES, RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, more BLUE-WINGED TEAL and other
waterfowl. Continuing west on Washington 23, Dick observed EARED
GREBES at Crooked Knee Lake and 4 AMERICAN AVOCET and a few EARED
GREBE at Sheep Lake. See Washington DeLorme p. 72, c- and
d-1 to 6.

Dan Svingen reports COMMON TERN and CASPIAN TERN east of Sandpoint
on Lake Pend Oreille near Sunnyside on May 21. Take Idaho 200
east from Sandpoint toward Hope. The road to Sunnyside can be
accessed at Culver or at the sportsman's access a little further
east. See Idaho DeLorme p. 62, b-3. Dan also
reports DUSKY FLYCATCHER, HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER, AMERICAN REDSTART,
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER are in at St.
Maries. Dan heard at least 5 singing NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH in the
cottonwoods opposite the St. Maries sewage ponds along Idaho 3
just north of St. Maries on May 21. See Idaho DeLorme p. 60, c-2.

Dan also reports 4 LEWIS' WOODPECKERS at McAlister (sp?) Trail
southeast of Grangeville, Idaho, along the South Fork of the
Clearwater River. See Idaho DeLorme p. 55, c-4.5.
