Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bire Report. This recording
was made Thursday, October 2. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls
at 233-3976.

A NORTHERN WHEATEAR was found October 28 near the Tillamook High School. It
could not be relocated the next day. A female TUFTED DUCK was found October
29 among a swarm of waterfowl on Antelope Reservoir in Malheur County. It
could not be relocated.

Birders looking for the Wheatear at Tillamook October 29 watched a MERLIN,
a PALM WARBLER, three WHITE-TAILED KITES, and a FRANKLIN'S GULL in the
nearby meadowlands. Another PALM WARBLER and a SWAMP SPARROW were seen at
Bay City. On October 30 a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at Tillamook. An OLDSQUAW
was in the surf at Cape Meare Village and another flew past Cape Meares
itself.

Heavy goose movements were reported during the week. Among a newly arrived
flock of CACKLING GEESE on Sauvie Island November 1 was an EMPEROR GOOSE. A
flock of SNOW GEESE are now on the Island and the first TUNDRA SWANSare
being seen. A flock of WESTERN MEADOWLARKS was on the Island October 27.

Up to 14 GREAT EGRETS are still being seen in Portland's Oaks Bottom.
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS have returned to their North Portland winter
roost at Northeast 6th. at Faloma and Marine Drive. Large flocks of
SANDHILL CRANES were observed flying southward over the West Hills of
Portland during the week-end.

On October 29 two TRUMPETER SWANS wre at the Forest Grove Ponds. Three SURF
SCOTERS were on McGuire Reservoir in Yamhill County October 27. An adult
WESTERN GULL and a GLAUCOUS GULL were at Salem October 28.

A rare inland sighting of an adult HEERMANN'S GULL was made October 27 when
one was observed at Timothy Lake in the Cascades. Ten TRUMPETER SWANS and
two RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were near Wamic October 28. That day a COMMON
TERN, an OLDSQUAW, three SURF SCOTERS, and 15 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were at the
John Day Dam on the Columbia River.

An EURASIAN WIGEON was near the town of John Day October 29. Two hundred
SNOW GEESE, 38 DUNLIN, 16 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and two LEAST SANDPIPERS
were at Cow Lake in Malheur County October 28.
