Seattle Audubon has been sponsoring neighborhood bird surveys of various
parks, the most recent being Carkeek; the next is Magnuson. Teams are
being organized to visit the park once a month and walk a predetermined
loop with three minute observations at regular stops. The teams are led by
experienced birders but many of the participants are beginning birders.
Thus a bird identification class, covering winter birds, began last Monday
at the Arboretum and will conclude this coming Monday (7:30pm). In
addition to education the program will develop advocates for "other"
recreational uses of the parks and will develop a database over time.
