When you are in the neighborhood of Raymond and Tokeland, there is a
place not too far away that usually has White-tailed Kites. The town
of Frances lies on Rt 6, ca. 15 miles E of Raymond. Elk Prairie Rd is
on the S side of Rt 6 on the W side of Frances; about a mile down Elk
Prairie Rd is Schweitzer Rd (on the W, or right). Park anywhere on
the side of the road here and scan the trees on the far side of the
field on the E side of the road. A barn and farmhouse are at the S
end of the field (note: Elk Prairie Rd makes a big loop and returns to
Rt. 6 about a mile to the east). Rt 6 continues E to Chehalis, where
you can get on I-5 to head N or S.
I've been to this place three times in the fall ('93, '94, '95) and
found the kites there each time; visits have been as late as 31 Oct.
