Mike, I don't think it is incompatible that the East and South African
population would be resident, while the European population would be migratory.

Anyway, as Scott noted, there are now two species of Hoopoe (at least in
Sibley and Monroe list of birds of the world):
- the Eurasian Hoopoe _Upupa epops_
- the African Hoopoe _Upupa africana_
