On Thursday, November 9th, I gave a presentation to some county public works
engineers at Semiahmoo resort. Afterwards, I had a chance to talk to the
Snohomish County Public Works director, a couple of Snohomish County
commissioners, and their staff. I thanked them all for their respective
roles in the Spencer Island project, and told them what an important
contribution the area is for wildlife habitat. I also mentioned the
discussion that took place at the WOS meeting. It's really important to
make sure we send letters of thanks to these people. I am writing a letter
on behalf of Black Hills Audubon and hope that other chapters and
organizations follow suit. The people I talked to mentioned knowing a "Fred

Bird"; any speculation on Fred's involvement? We may be able to use this
example to convince other counties' commissioners to follow suit.

The slide show by Jim Rosso at the WOS meeting last night (Mon.) was
excellent for those that missed it. Also at the meeting the subject of
Spencer Is. came up. There has been excellent birding since it opened up
Sep. 30 and it promises to be the prime birding spot in this area. It was
suggested by Harold Ritland that notes of appreciation be sent to the
Snohomish Co. Parks Dept. for preserving this unique wetlands habitat. We
should also give thanks that dogs and bicycles are prohibited from the area
and hope that this policy will continue. Apparently there has been
pressure to open it up to them. I called today to get an address to send
notes. I was told that Debbi Terwilliger was the driving force behind it
and notes of appreciation should be sent to her as follows:
