Serge,

I finally got home to the books and the issue was clarified by Collins: Birds
of East Africa. He notes the difference between the European/Sengal Hoopoes
U. epops which is indeed a migrant to East andCentral Africa and U. epops
africana which is a resident in East, Central and Southern Africa. The
visual difference is the presence of a white bar accross the primaries not
present in the resident species. In my undisciplined Nov-February
observations over the past two years I thought I was seeing the same bird.
Thanks.
