Subject: White-headed Woodpecker in WA. A summary of sighting
Date: Nov 14 23:42:10 1995
From: Scott Ray - scray at wolfenet.com

As promised, here is a summary of locations offered by ya'll during the
White-headed Woodpecker discussion.

Russell Rogers:

Two locations that I have seen them often is the Camas Creek Burn and in
the pines above Manson both in Chelan County.
===========
Gene Hunn:

They are of course at Wenas; there is a population at Harriet Bullitt's
Sleeping Lady resort at Leavenworth; I found one up the Tucannon R.
canyon in the Blue Mtns. ca. 15 years ago; I've also seen them south of
Cashmere (not far from the Camas Creek burn but over the ridge).
However, I know of no regular spot in Kittitas Co. Does anyone?

One more spot for White-headed Woodpecker: Jack Nisbet used to see them
on his property just north of Chewelah in Stephens Co. in open Ponderosa
Pine woodland.
===========
David Wright:

I'm not sure how regular they are, but I've heard from a reliable source
that they can be found at Robinson Canyon, and of course there is Hal Op's
Elk Heights spot, which he described in WOSnews.
===========
Gene Revelas:

In July 1991, I observed a single female WHWP in open Pondera Pine above
Synarep, WA - Tunk Valley - bird was on private land and seen from the road.
Synarep is about 14 miles east of Riverside off Highway 97, Riverside is 5
miles north of Omak (Okanogan County). I've spent several weekends a year
(April-Oct) in this area since 1990, and this is my only WHWP sighting.

Did I miss this, but what about WHWO at Wenas Creek? Maybe you all
mentioned the general area and I don't know my WA geography well enough?

If not already mentioned, Swakane Canyon in Chelan Co. is usually
considered the best chance for WHWP in the general vicinity of Wenatchee.
In Okanogan Co., White-headed Woodpeckers are also found in the Sinlahekin area
north of Concunully.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Yakima Indian Reservation is tops for
White-headed Woodpeckers in WA. Everywhere I've been in the pine and
mixed-conifer forests, I find them readily. A tape is especially helpful and
seems to bring them in from afar. I may be sticking myself out on a limb here,
but I venture to say they are the commonest woodpecker in the open ponderosa
pine forests of the res.

White-headed Woodpeckers are uncommon but regular at Field Springs Park
in Asotin County.

Hi Tweets, here's the official BBA rendition of White-headed Woodpeckers
in Washington (that's WWW if you need an acronym!). Confirmed nests are
recorded from Asotin, Yakima, and Chelan counties. other spots with
possible nesting status are known from Klickitat, Kittitas, Okanogan, and
Stevens counties. No records from Ferry Co., but seems likely they are
there, just underreported. A curious record comes from the block just
south of Salmo Mt in Pend Oreille Co., but this is surely a coding error
(probably a 3-toed WP). More precisely, here are the sites I have in my
database. Any additions (besides the ones posted already) are welcome,
within the last 10 years.

We frequently bird along Bethel Ridge Road (Forest Road 1500) that runs
between Rts 12 and 410 in Yakima County. We see WHWO fairly regularly at an
area with a pond/beaver dam approx. 17.4 miles from Rt 12. and along Forest
Road 1503 (Little Rattlesanke). One reliable location on forest road 1503
is at another pond (about 6 miles from Jct with Bethel Ridge Rd).

Methow drainage(Black Canyon Creek). There are a few in the upper Aeneas
Valley along Cape Labelle Road (Delorme Atlas pg. 115, CD-8). I don't know
the exact location of
these birds. Birds have been observed near Winthrop a few times. At least
one pair nested in 1995 in Ferry County near the south end of Silver Creek
Road (Delorme pg 102, D-6).

Three WHWO were found by Mike and Merry-Lynn Denny on Bethel Ridge in
Western Yakima County on FS 312 and Tieton Pond which is 1.4 miles north of
Hwy 12.
