While in general I agree, I'm not the kind of person to allow public,
personal insults to fly by unanswered. Nor do I believe others
should do so.

There's an easy way to avoid the problem: people can discuss issues
without name-calling and personal attacks. I've tried to follow
this dictum in my posts over the past year or so that I've been a
member of this group, and believe me, I can be one hell of an
insulting, abrasive sonofabitch when I want to. I think I've done
quite well at minding my manners overall. I think the group at large
has done quite well at this. I'd like to think Herman could learn to
do so, too.

I asked Herman to do so in one post, while I continued onwards in
the discussion.

He not only ignored my request to cease name-calling and insults,
but returned with a fresh insult. Yes, my response was of
a personal nature.

Now, I did say I'd ignore further posts from Herman containing insults
and the like, as I did the rest of that post, and I will do my best to do
so.

But I don't feel in the least bit bad about responding the way I did.

Real birders don't take getting shat upon quietly.
