Gee, I so rarely get to admit to seeing all the cool birds people talk
about, that I am going to chime in now. On two summer trips to Austria, I
have seen several hoopoes in the Neusiedl and Salzburg areas. I have also
seen them in southern Germany, around Munich. I have seen them in March
and July in central and southern Spain. Since most of these sightings were
incidental, not necessarily on birding trips, I would say this bird is at
least FC (fairly common). Tim
