Mike Patrick informed us about the contents of his freezer. Be careful about
saying this sort of thing in public. As far as I know passive collecting
is illegal - you need a scientific permit to recover birds no matter how or
where you came across them. All recoveries are supposed to be turned over to
either to Dennis (well UPS to be less precise) or UW museums.

As for skinning it - I never "heard" you saying that.

I suppose if collared about lifting up a roadkill for example, you could
plead innocence or say that you were going to deliverit to the proper
authorities.

If all this seems ridiculous overkill, bear in mind that these laws are
really there to made it harder for dubious taxidermists to get more
interesting stuff like endangered species. "That peregrine in my freezer,
oh, I picked that up off the road one day !!"

It's pretty unlikely that you'd get nailed for one incident, unless you had
a freezer full - then the questions would start.

I seem to remember a discusssion about collecting roadkills when I first
jioned tweeters - way back in the dim and distant past - last October or
thereabouts. Might be worht checking the archives.

See ya,

Stuart
