Subject: Teaming with Wildlife Chapter activities

**Here is the long-awaited update on TWS chapter activities for Teaming with
Wildlife (TWW)**

The TWW National Coalition has reached 279 organizations and is still
growing. Many of the new coalition members are TWS chapters, sections and
student chapters who have sent in their endorsements. Zeiss Optical, a
binocular company, has agreed to sign onto the list.

The letter writing campaign is appearing to be very successful. Zeiss
signed on due, in large part, to the amount of letters received from its
customers. Many other companies are also beginning to notice the effort.
Keep up the good work!

Support for the initiative itself is still in the working phase. Meetings
with local industries, outdoor rec groups, garden clubs, etc are very
important. The initiative will pass if we have enough constituent support,
so talk it up with everyone that you know!

CHAPTER UPDATES:

The Virginia Coalition has created a list of possible coalition members,
such as: Appalachian Outfitters, Wild Bird Centers of America, paddling
clubs, hiking clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. They created an
outline for what needs to be done with each organization
1) Present the information on the Initiative at a meeting of the
organization or arrange for someone else to present the information
2) By working with the leadership in each organization, have them pass a
resolution supporting the Initiative and joining the coalition.
3) Have them include an article on the initiative in their newsletter that
encourages members to write letters to industry.
4) When the legislation is submitted, print another article encouraging
members to write or call legislators to support the legislation.
5) If they feel strongly about it, encourage volunteers to work with the
Steering Committee (state) to adopt new organizations.
They sent 240 letters to environmental educators in early October.

The New Jersey Chapter, Sacramento-Shasta Chapter, Nebraska Chapter, San
Francisco Bay Area Chapter, and the North Carolina Chapter all included
articles on the Funding Initiative in their most recent newsletter and the
Maryland/Delaware Chapter had TWW as its primary focus for the last meeting.
The Sacramento Chapter donated $500 and the MD/DE Chapter donated $100 to
The Wildlife Society's campaign. These donations, and those sent by the
membership, will be used to hire an intern to work full-time on the
initiative and (possibly) to take a workshop to chapters about the
initiative. The North-Central Section recently joined the national
coalition and sent a donation of $100 to TWS for the campaign. The NCS
president is hoping to garner unanimous support from all chapters within the
section for the initiative.

The Southeast Section has kicked off a competition among the student
chapters for TWW. The Southeast will offer $250 and a placque to the
student chapter that gets the most (letters to industry, letters to
congressmen, coalition building, etc.) done in promoting the initiative. A
set of guidelines on how it will be judged is being drafted and sent to each
chapter. The award will be given when TWW passes.

Thanks to everyone for updating the national office on your efforts.
Momentum is building and we appreciate all that is being done at the state
level. Keep us posted on your continued achievements.

Until next time, Jodi Applegate
