I think it's interesting that I've never seen a bittern EXCEPT in
flight. They have to be the best camouflaged bird--or at least rank in
the top 10. Just a week ago at the Reifel Refuge, I watched as one
landed in cattails no more than 25 feet away from me. I looked for over
10 minutes, but never could see it on the ground. I would love the
opportunity to photograph one on the ground--but I'll have to be able to
see it first!
