To add to earlier notes for Don Baccus, we have had at least 2 and possibly 3
different Broad-wings (1 ad., 1 or 2 imm.) at our Rocky Point/East Sooke Park
hawkwatch sites this Sept/Oct. The adjacent sites are at the southern tip of
Vancouver Island.

It may be that one bird (adult) managed to cross Juan de Fuca, possibly on
Saturday, Sept. 30. A juvenile was reported again on Sun. Oct 1, and could
still be there, as Suday's and Monday's weather were not as good for raptor
movements.

Today could be a crossing day for this and other raptors...a high NW flow,
but with fairly brisk SE surface winds. If the birds can rise high enough
to reach the NW flow, you could see them over the Olympic Peninsula and
perhaps Puget Sound this afternoon. It would be interesting to learn
if the Turkey Vultures accumulating on southern Van. Is (330 in the air at
one point last Saturday) are the same ones that were appearing in the Seattle
area on the weekend. Or do our birds follow the outer coast of the Olympic
Peninsula once they cross Juan de Fuca? The latter seems less likely to me.
Any thoughts?
