Subject: RBA: Possible McKay's Bunting in WA

Tweeters,

I just received a call from Mike Denny (dennme at wwc.edu) who just got a call
from Gerald Himmel of Greeley, CO. Gerald believes he found a McKay's
Bunting near Spirit Lake at Mt. St. Helens one week ago today, Sept. 27.
Gerald Himmel is apparently a member of the CO BRC and so is presumed to be
a reliable birder. The bird was found on a trail between the main road
(FR99) and Spirit Lake. His description of the exact location is not exactly
clear.

The trailhead can be found at a pullout overlooking Spirit Lake. The trail
descends to the base of the hill as it approaches the lake. The bird was
found in the middle of a wide flat area feeding on the ground with Pine
Siskins. Mr. Himmel apparently delayed reporting the bird out of fear of
reporting such a preposterous sighting.
