ABOUT TITNET
(revised Apr 95)
WHAT TITNET IS AND IS NOT

Titnet is known in the cyberspace world as a "small scholarly network." Its
purpose is to facilitate rapid communication among researchers actively
studying tits (family Paridae) or related cavity-nesting birds, especially
those species that compete with or otherwise interact with tits.

Some things Titnet is NOT:
o It is not a recreational birding network.
o It is not an information resource for the general public.
o It is not a chatting forum.
o It is not a general ornithological network.

WHO IS APPROPRIATE FOR TITNET AND WHO IS NOT

The principal participants in Titnet are:
o Researchers in universities, government labs, and similar units.
o Postdoctoral associates.
o Graduate students.
o Serious amateurs (e.g., those involved in banding or sound
recording).

Some types of persons who have found Titnet NOT appropriate to their needs:
o Recreational birders.
o Undergraduate students.
o General public interested in natural history.

NATURE OF TITNET

Titnet is a monitored network. It is not list-served and does not have
publicly available archives. Application to join Titnet and all material for
posting on Titnet should be sent to the monitor (details below). Postings are
archived and any previous posting will be provided to participants of the net
upon request to the monitor.

Titnet is a relatively quiet, focused network. Participants are not flooded
with a lot of general material, chit-chat, or echoes from other networks.
Titnet does not accept political, personal or commercial material. Titnet has
specific serials for concise information of a scientific nature (details
below).

ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL TIT SOCIETY

Titnet is the email arm of The International Tit Society (TITS). TITS has no
dues, no officers, and no constitution. All work in all endeavors of TITS
relies completely on volunteer participation. TITS holds informal meetings in
conjunction with major world meetings such as the International Ornithological
Congresses, but does not hold independent meetings. TITS publishes a hardcopy
newsletter, Parus International, about twice per year. Researchers interested
in receiving the newsletter must make separate application to its volunteer
editor and publisher:
Dr. Millicent S. Ficken
Cedar-Sauk Area Field Station
3095 Blue Goose Road
Saukville, WI 53080, U. S. A.
Financial restraints require that Parus International have a smaller
distribution list than Titnet. Please explain your research interests to Dr.
Ficken when requesting to receive Parus International.

THE NATURE AND SERIALS OF TITNET

Titnet accomplishes its goal of communication among researchers in two ways.
One is to maintain and post a list of researchers, their institutional
affiliations, their email addresses, and their topics and species of research.
This list is the numbered serial TITNET (full caps, as opposed to Titnet, the
network itself). TITNET is posted about twice per year. Newcomers to the net
may request from the monitor the last posting of TITNET. Postings are
cumulative and wholly replace older numbers.

The other mechanism for facilitating communication is via irregularly posted
information and inquiries, which are currently divided among these serials,
separately numbered:
o TITNEWS: announcements, editorials and administrative material.
o TITNOTES: research abstracts, requests for information, etc.
o TITPUBS: listings of recently published research papers.

Researchers are encouraged to post their abstracts (e.g., those prepared for
scientific meetings), research questions for which colleagues may have answers,
and bibliographic listings of their publications (as well as any others of
interest to the participants).

Postings of TITNET are the sole responsibility of the monitor. Contributions
to TITNEWS, TITNOTES, AND TITPUBS are not edited or reviewed; they are merely
put into Titnet's format and posted by the monitor. The amount of material
posted in these serials depends solely upon the contributions of the
participants of the net.

HOW TO JOIN TITNET

Appropriate participants should send the following information to the monitor
at JHailman at MACC.Wisc.edu:
1) Name
2) Institutional affiliation
3) Email address
4) Topic(s) of research (e.g., ecology, vocalizations, banding/ringing)
5) Species of research
All applications are acknowledged.
