Following are highlights of the 1995 survey of bald eagle nest sites in
Oregon. These data were compiled by Frank B. Isaacs and Robert G. Anthony,
Oregon Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit, Oregon State University, Corvallis
Oregon 97331.

-1995 was the 18th year of our survey of bald eagle nest sites for the state
and the 25th year for which we have tabulated data on bald eagles nesting in
Oregon.

-1995 was the 25th year Weyerhaeuser Co. has surveyed nest sites on their
land in Oregon. We congratulate Weyerhaeuser Co. for achieving this milestone
and are grateful to Bob Anderson, Weyerhaeuser Co. Biologist, for outstanding
cooperation during the past 18 years.

-History of bald eagle use has been compiled for 695 nest trees at 272 nest
sites. Bald eagle nest sites are located in 28 of 36 (78%) counties in
Oregon. The first nest for Yamhill County was documented this year.

-56 previously unknown nests were documented; 16 were at 15 previously
unknown nest sites and 40 were at previously known sites.

-8 nests blew down in 1995; 10 were lost in 1994; 23 in 1993; 7 in 1992, 14
in 1991, 28 in 1990, 7 in 1989, and 11 in 1988.

-245 of 264 sites surveyed (93%) were occupied (oc) by bald eagles; the
recovery population goal is 206 nesting pairs (oc sites) for Oregon.

-225 nestlings were observed at 234 oc sites where nesting outcome was
determined.

-Nesting success was 61% and resulted in a 5-year average of 60%; the
recovery goal is a 5-year average of 65%.

-Productivity was 0.96 young per occupied (yg/oc) site and resulted in a
5-year average of 0.96 yg/oc site; the recovery goal is a 5-year average of
1.00 yg/oc site.

-Young/successful site was 1.58. Three nestlings were raised to fledging at 6
sites. The number of sites with 3 nestlings in the past was 0 from 1971-75, 1
in 1976, 0 in 1977 and 78, 1 in 1979, 2 in 1980, 1 in 1981, 2 in 1982, 0 in
1983, 1 in 1984, 2 in 1985, 1 in 1986, 2 in 1987, 3 in 1988, 4 in 1989, 0 in
1990, 4 in 1991, 5 in 1992, 2 in 1993, and 7 in 1994.

-Productivity was highest in Recovery Zone (RZ) 9 (Blue Mountains) with 1.60
yg/oc site. Productivity was lowest in RZ 10 (Columbia River) with 0.58 yg/oc
site.

-Recovery population goals were met or exceeded in 6 (RZ's 10, 11, 13, 21,
22, and 23) of 10 (60%) RZ's in Oregon; the recovery goal is for population
goals to be exceeded in 80% (38) of the 47 RZ's in the 7-state Pacific
recovery area.

-841 observations at nest sites were used to complete the 1995 survey. 182
people, including volunteers and representatives of 22 organizations,
contributed to the survey. We thank each and every one of you! Without your
efforts the survey would have been much less complete.
