This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

After a dreary August and September at Mann Lake east of Lewiston,
Idaho, things are picking up. On October 12, John & Marty Hirth report
33 dowitchers, of which 4 were SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and 8
were LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS. They also saw a CLARK'S GREBE in
with 14 WESTERN WESTERN GREBES, 2 SANDHILL CRANES, and a
single DUNLIN. Today, October 13, Dan Svingen reports 3 BLACK-
BELLIED PLOVERS, a single AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 1 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and 23 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
To get to Mann Lake, take US 12 west into Lewiston, cross the
Clearwater River via the Memorial Bridge and stay in the left lane. Take
the first left after crossing the bridge onto Main Street toward East
Lewiston. At the blinking light, turn right onto Lindsay Creek Road.
Follow it until it terminates at Grelle Avenue. Turn left onto Grelle and
after Grelle makes a 20 m.p.h. right turn, turn left. Immediately you'll see
a sign for Mann Lake. Continue straight, through the dead end, to the
lake. See Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1.

At the Walla Walla River Delta today, October 13, Mike Denny reports
147 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 21 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 1
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, and a first year PEREGRINE FALCON. The Walla
Walla River Delta is about 30 miles west of Walla Walla at the Columbia
River, just north of the junction of US 12 and US 730. Cross the Walla
Walla River and go 0.2 mile more. Just before milepost 307, turn left
onto the gravel two-track opposite North Shore Road. Walk across the
railroad tracks and follow the well-worn path. See Washington DeLorme
p. 40, d-1.

More shorebirds were seen by Mike Denny up Woodward Canyon Road
west of Lowden, Washington, today. Mike reports 1 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, 15 COMMON SNIPE, 3 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and a
single LESSER YELLOWLEGS. Woodward Canyon Road heads north from
US 12 about 1.75 miles west of Lowden. See Washington DeLorme p.
40, d-4.

On October 5, Scott Ray observed a male SURF SCOTER at the interstate
bridge at Vantage, Washington, along the Columbia. A female was seen
near Ginko State Park campground. Vantage is along Interstate 90.
Good viewing can be had from the west side of the Columbia via
Wanapum Road or the east side via Washington 243. See Washington
DeLorme p. 52, a-1.

Dan Svingen reports 3 BEWICK'S WRENS at the Heart of the Monster
interpretive area 2 miles south of Kamiah, Idaho, on October 8. See
Idaho DeLorme p. 55, b-4.5.

Mike Denny reports a late ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and a very late
BANK SWALLOW at McNary NWR Headquarters, just southeast of Pasco,
Washington, today, October 13. See Washington DeLorme p. 39, c-8.

Finally, John Gatchett found a SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER October 7 at
Bully Creek Reservoir in Malheur County, Oregon. The bird was seen
again by John and Dave Lawrence on October 9. If you'd like more
details on this sighting, please call Dave at 208-454-1219.

For the next three weeks Dale Goble will be filling in for me while I'm off
to the Midwest. Dale always moans that nothing good is reported while
I'm gone. Although I like that, you know I hate to miss something good,
please go beat the bushes for something good so Dale will fill in for me
next time I have to leave town.

Good birding!
