As some of you probably know, the bannana slug is (was?) perhaps
the most unusual mascot in college atheletics - the University of
Santa Cruz. I say "was" because at one point a new college prez
thought it was unbecoming, and tried to replace it with a creature
sporting a more Heroic Image. I know there was an election where
the student body supported the slug overwhelmingly - a stunning
display of good taste. Don't know who won that fight - perhaps Alvaro
does.

Anyway, the school has no football team but does compete in basketball.
They wear yellow uniforms. The then-new prez apparently was most
deeply offended by the fact that the team (not cheerleaders - the TEAM)
used to show up at games wearing long, transparent plastic capes trailing
their yellow uniforms - the capes being representative of the slug's
slimy trail!
