There are two races of the Red-breasted Sapsucker: ruby and Daggett's
(ruber and daggetti). The ruber racee, which is a more northerly race,
is a lot more brightly red than the daggetti, which is the more
southerly. The birds I;ve seen in the Seattle area have been the much
brighter race of the two--the birds in the Bend area of Oregon tend to be
the duller daggetti birds (red like red-napeds). Sounds like you've got
one of the brighter ones. RK
