While you're right to some degree, our group really isn't out of the
birding community but rather was started by a professional wildlife
biologist who specializes in birds (worked endangered species with
USF&W before this project). He did his MS, though, on coyotes.
And most of our volunteers who bird are also birding professional
biologists.

Likewise the folks at Golden Gate in California - many are "hawkers",
not birders (and mostly not professional biologists).

I think Stuart is speaking of what I'd describe as the recreational
birder, rather than the professional biologist who works with
birds professionally and also birds for fun, just as many professional
photographers take vacation and family snaps like normal people.
