I think "pine" is the culprit. I've never used this mailer, but
watched someone else use it once and was horrified to see that it
dumps you into the editor with the full message you are replying to
message. This results in posts such as you describe by default.

Some folks may not be particularly fluent in their local editor, so
perhaps some of us might offer our services as advice-givers in this
regard. I'm able and willing to answer questions about "vi", for
instance, for folks mailing from Unix systems, as at least some of our
UW correspondents do (but I'm useless about PC and MACs, so don't even
think about asking me!).
