I wouldn't say you posting needed an apology - it's an important issue.
Though I'm confused about your assertion that conservation groups are being
politically naive. I understand that they oppose the measure so that makes
them against the timber interest, right ?

I'm kind of confused - anyone care to enlighten me ?

W. Edwards also wrote about the apparent double-standard of the Sierra Club
opposing gill-netting in Europe compared to their support in Puget Sound.

The two situations are NOT comparable. 3000 birds killed in Puget Sound in
one year is trivial compared to the thousands or perhaps hundreds of thousands
of birds killed in areas in Europe comparable to Puget Sound, such as the
Skaggerak and Kettegat areas of the Baltic. And the knock on effect of over
fishing on the HUGE seabird colonies in northen Scotland and Norway.

About 15% (if I remember right) of the guillemots I banded in Caithness,
Scotland ended up in fishing nets. Jon Anderson noted that often birds caught
in Puget Sound were released alive. This as far as I know never happens in
Euope, where nets are trawled around for a long time often couple of days.
