I'd agree with Don - though in the wake of certain social upheavals in this
country, which will remain nameless - I think that this attitude is untenable
and undesirable.

The apparent lack of concern or even hostility to conservation issues may be
a reaction to the 'intellectual elitism' displayed to folks of a 'rural
disposition'. Take a look at the bumper stickers on the trucks in Aberdeen -
it's easy to see an urban / rural divide in this country as well as an high
education / lower education one.

This may seem kind of extreme - but think about it, at least for a moment.
The United States is currently a highly polarized society. Now that it's no
longer acceptable (in public) to denegrate racial minorities, perhaps the
target group has shifted or at least refocussed to the intellectual
minorities.

I know people who talk about 'white trash' in a way that they would NEVER
apply to non-whites.

This may be easier for an outsider like myself to see - being a "furener an'
all". It also may be a misconception on my part - though the same thing
happens back home.

The moral of the story is that in the current political and ecomonic climate,
conservation needs all the help it can get. There's no point in making
enemies unnecessarily.
