I've gotten semi-involved in a project to involve rural high school
girls in science, particularly in ecology. There's a team of 4
students and a couple teachers in Lake Roosevelt (near the Grand Coulee
Dam? I've never been there) who want to do monthly surveys of the bird,
insect, & plant life around their homes. They'd like some information
about the common birds that they are likely to see.

Kathleen: Birding in the soap lakes, banks lake, coulee Dam area is
very good - particularly great in the spring. I suggest calling the
National recreation area at Coulee Dam (they would have a bird list)
509-633-9441. Also you could call Gary Kuiper, retired park
superintendent (who lives in coulee Dam, look him up in the ). He is a
great birder, and former president of the local Audubon chapter there
(chapter name escapes me).

Some very good birding can be found along Hwy 155 from soap lakes
through banks lake to Electric City. Dry falls state park and
Steamboat rock state parks are good stopping points. Spring is very
good for birding, and for sunny weather!
