This is Dale Goble with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, October 27th.

On October 22d, And Stepniewski observed a 1st-winter BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKE along the Columbia River in southernmost Grant County. The
spot (T 14N R 26E Sec. 2) lies within the closed portion of Saddle Mtn
Nat'l Wildlife Refuge. The bird was moving upstream with scads of
Ring-bill, California and a few Herring Gulls. There have been no further
reports of this bird.

Andy also reported the first lowland GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCH of
the fall atop the Saddle Mountains, which is easily reached from Hwy 24
by taking the road from near Milepost 60 north to the crest.

Shirley Sturts reports that Jack McNeel, who lives in the Stanley Hill area
of Coeur d'Alene had his first BLUE JAY of the winter on the 16th. Last
winter he had about five birds all winter.

Pam Comrie found a PACIFIC LOON on the 21st on the Spokane River in
Post Falls off the bridge that crosses the river on Spokane Street. The
bird was seen later that day by Gordon Comrie and Shirley Sturts.

A flock of 6-7 GREAT EGRET were seen by Susan Weller in a field near
the Jr. High in Kellogg on the 25th. People living in the area said the
birds had been around for about a week.

John Shipley briefly visited the Harrison area on the 22d. He reports
good concentrations of ducks, geese, and swans in Anderson and
Thompson Lakes. The best sighting was a flock of 45 HOODED
MERGANSERS in the northeast end of Anderson Lake. The two lakes are
at the mouth of the Couer d'Alene River where it empties into Coeur
d'Alene Lake. Idaho DeLorme p. 60, C-2.

Finally, the NORTHERN SHRIKES have returned to the Moscow area. On
Tuesday I saw a single bird along the Moscow-Troy Highway on the way
to the dentist in Kendrick and another at the top of Coyote Grade
southeast of Genesee.
