To repeat the incident that I saw this summer. A Red-breasted Sapsucker was
taking berries off of a Red Elder and stashing them in a crevice of a nearby
tree and putting them in the holes of the tree that it had drilled. I still
have not found any literature about sapsuckers storing food. I have
photographs of the sapsucker with a berry in its beak and photos of the
berries sitting in the holes of the tree. Couldn't get pictures of it
actually putting the berries in the crack of the tree. But I did watch it
through a scope as it managed to bring the berries up from its crop and drop
them in. It was quite amazing.
