Sorry Dennis but my "Father Ornithologicus' Mediaeval Guide to Birding"
states quite clearly that it is swallows (in this case the european variety)
that hide in the mud in the Autumn and use hollow reeds to breathe.

Methinks ye muste be mistaken :-)
