I think an important character is the ability to learn and an even more
important character is the enthusiasm for learning. I prefer the "life choice"
as opposed to the "genetic mandate" argument - to paraphrase a beer
commercial.

Innate ability is always going to help but I'm sure that it can only add a
small advantage. Working hard to become more attentive etc is always going to
produce a better results.

Luck and timing always comes from hard work. The "trick" is to make it look
effortless then you can "intimidate" others with your superior abilities :-)
