Here's a story of professional ignorance from Cape Cod. While working
there, a friend was approached by a 'natural resources officer' in charge
of making sure shellfishing laws were upheld, nesting colonies weren't
disturbed, etc. My friend worked for Mass. Audubon, cataloging tern
colonies. The 'natural resources officer' went on to explain how he
thought it was neat that all those little terns would grow up to be big
ones. He didn't realize he was looking at two species: Least and Common.
