Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert. This recording
was made Thursday September 7. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls
at 233-3976.

On August 31, two COMMON MOORHENS were observed at a marshy pond along I84
about a mile east of the Sandy River. They could not be relocated. A male
BLACKPOLL WARBLER was at Frenchglen September 4. A MANX TYPE SHEARWATER was
observed among a migrant flock of SOOTY SHEARWATERS off Cape Meares
September 2.

Five WHITE PELICANS were at Euchre Creek near Ophir on the southern Oregon
coast September 2. A RUFF was among the swarm of shorebirds at Bandon Marsh
September 3. A MARBLED GODWIT, four RED KNOTS, and 160 SURFBIRDS were near
Seal Rocks State Park September 3. The SNOWY EGRET has remained along the
Upper Yaquina Bay. 25 GREAT EGRETS are also in the bay area.

A STILT SANDPIPER, a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and six PECTORAL SANDPIPERS
were on Sauvie Island September 2. 32 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were on the
Island that day.

Three PALM WARBLERS were at a farm yard in Mountaindale, near North Plains
September 1. A MERLIN was at the Forest Grove Ponds September 4.

A BLACK-NECKED STILT was at Begger's Tick Marsh in southeast Portland
September 4. It could not be relocated. Six BROWN PELICANS were observed
the evening of September 6 flying from the west over Portland's West Hills
- apparently heading for the Willamette River near the Sellwood Bridge.

The first migrant FOX SPARROW was in west Yamhill County August 27. The
first GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was on Sugarloaf Mountain in the Coast Range
of Polk County September 3. A BREWER'S SPARROW was on Sugarloaf Mountain
September 1. A SWAINSON'S HAWK was along the I5 freeway south of Albany
September 4.

Two COMMON TERNS were along the Columbia River near Rufus September 2.
Three WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and a SNOW GOOSE were at Wamic that day.

Heavy migrations are now taking place in all areas. The VAUX'S SWIFTS now
number into the thousands at the northwest Portland's Chapman School
evening roost. They should peak there in the next week or two.

Thats it for this week.
