I have a friend who frequently surfs the Long Beach area. He arrived back
at work and told everyone that a "Penguin" was in the water with him. This
became an instant office sensation with lampooning pictures posted etc.
Some folks came and asked me, "the office bird weirdo", how a Penguin could
have gotten here. I explained to everyone who asked that it was not a
Penguin. "But he saw it!" was the usual reply. When the surfer himself
arrived in my office I showed him a picture of a Common Murre and he agreed
that that was the "Penguin" he had seen. Over a year later, however, the
legend of the Penguin at Long Beach persists around the office.
