I just reread Bryan Gates' original posting about the Loggerhead Shrike and
note he said "rictal bristles." The *nasal* bristles are what differ in
color in the two species.

The rictal bristles are the "flycatcher-style" bristles mentioned by Chris
Maack that extend out from the corner of the mouth (the rictus), and they
are black in both species (and probably even more difficult to see in the
field, as there are relatively few of them and they're separated from one
another).
