Please excuse this beginner question. In my short birding
career I have concentrated on birds that initaillly caught my
interest -> passerines. Now that I have the Puget Sound all
around me I have begun to be very interested in birds that
utilize water as a niche.

Some are obvious in the field guide, but Gulls are, shall we
say, challenging. I realize that (like raptors) they have
many morphs, especially in their first few years.

I'm not looking for an easy answer, rather a good reference
that I could read to advance (initiate) my ability to identify
local Gulls. I want to know what's possible based upon time
of year and locale.

This may not be a subject appropriate to tweeters discussions,
