Lots (most?, all?) mushrooms attract/host insects during both the living
and decaying (and abundantly!) stages of the fruiting body's growth.
When decaying, the insects are usually found within the tissues as well
as on them.

So, regardless of the apparent lack of nutritional value of the mushroom's
tissue, there is this other source of possible nutrition at the old
mushroom barn for an enterprising bird. So, Tom's question asking
whether birds feed on mushrooms needs to be answered with "Were they
feeding on mushrooms, or were on insect delectables...?" ;>)
