Since Phalaropes are in the news, some of you no doubt found this snippet
published "off the wire" from Britain in the Seattle Times:

BIRDWATCHERS who had traveled to glimpse a rare Red-necked
Phalarope at a Leicestershire reservoir watched in horror as
a 4-foot pike emerged from the water and gobbled the bird down.

So much for the twitchers who didn't get up early enough. Brought back
memories of watching waterfowl chicks disappear into a sudden eddy on deep
ponds in Cheshire.... Pike are awesome, the most efficient freshwater
predator in Europe next to a dragon-fly larva or the water-beetle
_Dityscus marginatus_ (on their own scale, of course!).
