On David Wright's advice, I tuned in to uwash.friends-of-campus-cats to
see what they're all about. Obviously some of them are tweeters also (hi
y'all). Well I think we have an opportunity to work together to remove
cats from the fill. There was some talk on their line about catching the
cats and removing them from the Fill. In fact, they've been locating
some of the cats out there already. Our goal (tweeters) is a cat-less
Montlake Fill. Their goal (FCC) is the kind treatent of cats and
effective solutions to feral cat problems. We're not so far off.
Removal of cats by live-trapping may be feasible at the Montlake Fill.
If you think about it, there's only one attractive route for
recolonization of this spot, that's from the east via CUH. The fill is
surrounded on all other sides by playing fields, parking lots, or water,
not a cat's favorite 'habitat'. So certainly cats would return, but it
might be a much slower process than thought. Keeping cats out of this
area would require sustained effort, but so will loosestrife control.
