FYI, the BOU = AOU.
I guess that was too cryptic. The BOU is the British Ornithological Union
and is a British equivalent to the AOU, the American Ornithologists Union.
They make decisions on species status, name changes etc. for Britain, I
don't have any idea if their decisions have any weight in other European
countries. In North America, north of Mexico (not including Quebec)
decisions made by the BOU are ***assumed*** to be the official European
decision by birders, largely because of our common language. I imagine that
there must be some European ornithological body that makes decisions for the
continent, but I am not aware of it.
