Many birds are starting to move into the Sauvie Island/Ridgefield complex
as otheres have noted. Today, in a brief run out to the Vancouver Lake
area, there were three Great Egrets in a pond-like area just west of the
entrance to the Port of Vancouver. Vaux' Swifts were also moving along
as well as kestrels and red-tailed Hawks.
Saturday I am leading a Portland Audubon field trip to Ridgefield
NWR near (appropriately enough) Ridgefield. Meet at Audubon House, 5151
NW Cornell in Portland at 8:30, or at the Carty Unit Parking Lot at thee
refuge (north of town, where the pedestrian railroad bridge is) between 9
and 9:15. The forecast is for morning showers, and we'll gauge our
activity at that time (as if I trust Portland meteorologists). There is
no limit to the number of participants and few people have called me to
this point with regard to the trip, so feel free to drop by. The trip is
scheduled as a half-day trip--ending around 1 pm.
