That's an excellent question, Dennis! Unless one spends all of one's time
at the 3 or 4 traditional birder hangouts (Skagit flats, Ocean Shores,
Montlake Fill, etc) it is possible to bird every weekend for months in
Washington and not run into another birder. I know, because I've done it!
Notice I said BIRDER hangouts, not BIRD hangouts! Very little birding
effort is made away from known areas.

Just as amazing is how few Washington birders show up when a true rarity is
found. From the reports, more Oregon birders tried for the Walla Walla
County eider a few weeks ago than WA birders. If the rarity is a first
state record however, unbelievable efforts are made to chase it!
