About the same time that Newt's plane was sucking in a goose, a flock of Canada
geese was observed here crossing the runway in front of a departing AWACS radar
plane at Elmendorf Air Force Base. The number 1 engine was then observed popping
and sparking. The plane crashed and burned in the woods off the end of the
runway with none of the 24 onboard surviving. Thirteen dead geese were retrieved
from the runway right afterwards. Nothing has been proved yet, but there may
have been a "fatal flock." Newt was luckier than he perhaps realizes.
